We are a group of architects, interior designers, illustrators, technicians, managers, advisors, mentors, leaders and learners. We have degrees from the likes of Yale, Georgia Tech and Southern Polytechnic. We come from all over, and we all share a readiness for putting our heads together and helping each other grow.
Our team is always evolving and we are looking for architects, project managers, CAD technicians and interns who bring new ideas, dedication and energy to the work. The Corcoran Ota culture takes care of people and fosters professional growth, while encouraging a balanced life.
Michael Corcoran, Partner
An international student of architecture, Michael holds an undergrad degree from North East London Polytechnic and a masters degree from the Yale School of Architecture, and is a member of both the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the American Institute of Architects (AIA). His unique designs have been recognized by many award panels and publications over the years, including the New York Times and the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).
Early in his career, he honed what he calls “a humanistic approach to design” that engages people with a clearly defined environment that speaks to their functional needs, aesthetic preferences and diverse lifestyles. In essence, he understands life on all levels and builds places that people love to call home. With a belief that architecture should be a combination of resident and client expectations, he pays as much attention to budgets and timelines as he does to the culture and amenities that a community offers. Michael thinks beyond site plans and feasibility studies, building strong relationships with clients through an honest and open approach.
Over his impressive tenure, Michael has had the opportunity to work on a diverse list of projects, from boutique hotels to thoughtful assisted living communities to one-of-a-kind homes. His dedication to the work can be seen as he continues to tackle complex challenges with the same passion his clients first recognized 40 years ago. Furthermore, Michael’s passion for leading and developing young talent is as strong as ever.
When he’s not sketching, meeting with clients or mentoring his energetic staff, you can find Michael playing lead guitar in Atlanta’s oldest rock and roll band, The Psychics.
Dean Ota, Partner
As co-founder of Corcoran Ota, Dean has been here since the beginning and continues to play an integral role in the firm’s success. He graduated from Georgia Tech’s College of Architecture and later returned to campus as a studio instructor in the same halls that helped him hone his creative and technical skills. During this time, Dean was able to engage and develop students in a collaborative environment. Continuing education is near and dear to Dean’s heart, as he has further developed his own skills in the past decade, learning AutoCAD and Revit—skills that most of his contemporaries lack.
Before partnering with Michael, Dean helped create notable buildings across the southeast, including some that grace Atlanta’s skyline. He gained extensive experience in hospitality, most notably with his design of Atlanta’s Four Seasons Hotel (now the Occidental Hotel). Dean’s understanding of how to define spaces that are warm and luxurious, timeless and modern, comfortable and impeccably detailed speak to his understanding of how to draw people in, and build places that consider life on all levels.
The synergy between Michael and Dean can be best described as two people with a common philosophy who view things from different angles. With Michael’s vision, client rapport and leadership skills and Dean’s ability to bring projects to life with beautiful illustrations, detailed elevations and technological skills, they compliment one another to a tee and continue to grow the firm to new heights.
